BAMIDBAR: DESERT POEMS

Last week I wrote a dvar Torah for Temple Beth Am's "Taste of Torah", on Bamidbar (May 14, 2021)

In the dvar, I mention a new series of poems I've been working on, inspired by a school assignment to create a water ritual. I wrote most of the poems I have so far in the desert, because the deserts are alive, even without water. Below are a few short excerpts.

I wonder if you've been to the amazing desert near you? I wonder if they even exist unspoiled as so many were in the early 60s when I went to Pomona College? They're not the same as the deserts in your poems, but they can make the spirit soar in those wide spaces.

George, most of these poems were written or came to me in the Mojave.
